by Janice Carpino

Starting out with my one orchid plant. Just wondering if the one stem of flowers, can I get another stem to come from the one main stem. So as to have two stems from one main. Not sure if this can be done.

Depends On The Orchid
by: Melissa

Hi Janice, Thanks for your question.

It depends on the kind of orchid. Many do not, some do. Phalaenopsis or Moth Orchids, a wonderful and very popular orchid can sometimes push a new spike from a still alive but spent flower stem from one of the nodes. This usually does not happen right away and if it does it shortens the time to flower a couple of months. Many Phalaenopsis flower about once a year unless they are a freeblooming hybrid.

So yes, it can be done but not all the time and not with many orchids.

Hope this helps. I think there is a thread or two about pruning orchids on the Phalaenopsis Orchid Care page.

Hope this helps.
