Orchid With No Flowers

My orchid, that I have had for a year now, has no flowers but has big, beautiful leaves. It is one that you are only supposed to put ice cubes in it once a week. I just want to know if the flowers will ever come back and if so, what I can do to help it?

Proper Care For Your Kind of Orchid Will Help It Re-Bloom
by: Melissa

Sorry it has taken me a while to answer this question. I have been traveling.

It is great that your plant has big beautiful leaves, this indicates that you are doing something right! Good job. You do not say what kind of orchid it is but I am guessing it is a Phalaenopsis. Many times, some people call this an ice cube orchid. By the way, I DO NOT recommend or like the idea of watering ANY orchids with ice cubes.

For further discussion see the Questions and Answers on the Phalaenopsis Orchid Care page.(http://www.orchids-plus-more.com/phalaenopsis-orchid-care.html) And I would also recommend that you read the care of Phalaenopsis on that page as that will help you know what your plant might need to re-bloom, if in fact it is a Phalaenopsis.

You want to know if the flowers will ever come back.

YES, they will. Given the right circumstances (light, humidity, water, etc) your orchid will re-bloom.

There are many kinds of orchids so you need to know what kind of orchid it is and then find out what that kind of orchid needs to thrive.

What can you do to help? Learn what kind of orchid it is and provide it with the light, water, humidity that that kind of orchid needs to thrive.

Often, if you have the watering in order it is just a matter of getting the right light for it to bloom. Phalaenopsis like bright indirect light, about 1500 footcandles if footcandles means anything to you. I grow mine in Northern California about 6 feet (2 meters) off a South facing window and they do well.

Hope this helps.
